Metivtah: The World Could Be Otherwise: Imagination and Tikkun Olam

Inevitably, moving into the High Holidays season, it's a good time to tune ourselves to ourselves, to look within. This daylong meditation retreat will feature silent sitting and walking meditation, Jewish chanting, and talks by and discussion with Norman Fischer based on his new book, The World Could Be Otherwise: Imagination and the Bodhisattva Path. (Copies of the book will be available for purchase and signing at the retreat).

Although the book is based on Buddhist concepts, Norman is also a seasoned teacher of Jewish meditation and will focus the material on the Jewish practice of Tikkun Olam, repairing the world.

The title of this workshop comes from Norman’s new book, The World Could Be Otherwise: Imagination and the Bodhisattva Path, which argues for an imaginative approach to spiritual practice for our difficult times. The book and workshop are built around the idea of the bodhisattva path, consisting of six traditional practices, giving, ethical conduct, patient forbearance, joyful effort, meditation, and imaginative wisdom.

We’ll spend the afternoon practicing silent meditation and talking about these six great practices, and how to make them our own.
